Technology a World Away
Since our first trip in 2003, we have brought about 400 computers to to nearly 30 secondary and primary schools. The schools range in size from 700 to 2200 students and represent both government and private secondary education. Since many students enter the workforce upon completion of their secondary education, the knowledge of how to word process and use spreadsheets will enhance their opportunity for employment. In addition we bring software like Microsoft Encarta, which acts as an amazing and huge resource for schools who don't have the means of connecting to the internet and provides students with more up-to-date knowledge to excel in their learning. Our goal is to build a relationship between students in the United States and students in Uganda that will one day grow into an electronic-connected community that fosters learning and boundless opportunities.

The computers are on their way to Uganda and should arrive in early June! Right now the team is making the final preparations before leaving on June 21st. It's going to be a very exciting year. The CFU 2007 team is bigger than ever--students from Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart and South Kitsap High School will be going this year. Additionally, because there are so many people, a portion of the team will help set up Uganda's first computer refurbishment center InterConnection Uganda. The refurbishment center will be led by the new center's staff in Uganda and a team of students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Stay tuned for more information as things develop.

The team returned from Uganda on the 14th of July. I apologize for not informing our followers about this; our site appears to be running on "African time" this summer, but hopefully we can get things up and going again. Anyway, this year was amazing! We crossed the Nile on wooden boats, saw elephants and even a lion at the national park, and enjoyed a wonderful night of Ugandan music at the cultural centre (among many other wonderful things you will soon hear about). Also, we apologize for not posting anything in the blog past our London stop. Because the group was so large this year, we couldn't spend that much time at Internet cafes because we were busy teaching students, setting up labs, and enjoying all that Uganda has to offer. Hopefully we'll have better luck with that next year.
Expect to see a photo journal of this year's trip up sometime in the next few months, as well as more information on Computers for Uganda 2007 once we have it. There are big plans, and great things are just beginning to happen!
Also, we're looking for a second webmaster to help the current webmaster keep up this site, as she's starting college and is going to be massively busy. If anyone on this year's team is interested, please email the webmaster for more information.
